Be Creative

Decorating cookies is a great way for your little Valentine to explore their creativity in a sweet way! I mean, who doesn’t love cookies covered in frosting and sprinkles? 🙂 My 3 year old daughter loves to play with sprinkles. It’s good for them to play with different textures to help with sensory as well! It’s a win win!

I found these Pillsbury ready to bake heart shape cookies! The package includes 12 white and 12 pink sugar cookies. In only 8-10 minutes you have 24 adorable mini heart shaped cookies for your little one to decorate! To me, they were the perfect size!

It’s important to use a “cookie” icing, as it spreads easier and melts seamlessly onto the cookie. I chose the Wilton pink cookie icing. You could also use red or white as well! I also went with the Wilton assorted Valentine’s sprinkles. I love the container and it keeps all of the sprinkles organized and together for a later use.

I found these adorable heart shaped silicone baking cups in Target’s Bullseye section, an area of Target I visit way too frequently! I like to use these for more than just baking. For this activity, I used the cups to separate the different varieties of sprinkles, making it easier for my daughter to pick the sprinkle of her choosing! This also makes it more fun versus just shaking it out of the container, I think! 🙂

I like to use this 9 x 13 inch baking sheet for cookie decorating activities. It’s small enough to fit on a highchair, counter top or any smaller surface for your little one to use. The slight lip around the edges also help to keep all of the sprinkles from dancing their way across your kitchen floor! I placed the silicone cups filled with sprinkles on the sheet as well. This helps to have all of the choices within reach.

We completed the cookie decorating at the kitchen counter. My three year old daughter could easily reach using a step stool. I recommend one that is slip resistant with rubber on the bottom and on the steps for safety. This one would also be great for extra support. She enjoyed being able to choose the different sprinkles to decorate and sampled a few as well! 😉

As you can see, the sprinkles stayed in the baking sheet! These are great to use for other kinds of crafts that may include glitter and beads as well. Have you ever tried picking up every piece of glitter off of the floor? Definitely not fun!

This was a very easy and fun activity to do with my daughter. The cookies turned out great and were a nice sweet treat to share with family and friends! Cleanup was a breeze also! 😉 I hope you enjoyed this idea and learned a few tips and tricks to help make your next cookie decorating experience a sweet one!
