Be Creative

Who else is loving the tie dye trend right now? We have done a lot of tie dye crafts recently with bright colors and thought it would be fun to do one with patriotic colors! What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than by making a cute banner to hang! This banner is also very easy to make with items you already have at home!

Materials needed:

Directions:

Place a protective layer onto a table. We used a cutting board. Flatten the coffee filters and keep two layered together at a time.

Randomly draw on two coffee filters layered together at a time. The marker will bleed onto the second one making two identical filters.

The filters that have more sections of concentrated colors (example: stars and circles versus lines) will turn out brighter as an end result. I had to join in on the fun as well! 😉

Keep the pair of filters combined, place on a cookie sheet or rimmed plate and drop water onto filter. If you want more white to show don’t completely saturate the filter. It was easier for Ambrey to completely wet them (which still turned out cute in the end)!

Place two paper towels onto your protected surface (cutting board in our case) and place the saturated filters onto the paper towels. You can layer them on top of each other until you are done with the water and ready to dry them! I do want to note that if you use the dark blue Mr. Sketch marker it does not bleed as well when saturated with water.

You can let the filters dry outside or use a blow dryer. We used a blow dryer on the lowest setting to dry each pair individually. This was a very quick process! Last time we put these outside they started blowing all over the yard. Make sure to place a weight on them if you prefer that method. 🙂

Cut out the star outline and place on top of one filter. Trace around the outline using a pencil. The pencil will easily erase off if you mess up! Stack all of the filters together. You do not need to trace the star on each filter (unless you have a ton of time on your hands)!

I layered 8 filters together and cut out the star outline. This was very easy because the filters are thin.

Keeping the stars stacked together, punch two holes in the upper triangle of the star towards the middle. This will ensure the banner lays flat versus twisting as it would with only one hole. String your ribbon through the holes.

We only used five of the stars on our banner. We hung the others as suncatchers in the window! Both options showcase the cute tie dye print!

This banner is very easy to make and helps to add a cute patriotic touch to our fireplace! You could also string it along a window or cabinet as well! The possibilities are endless as to where you can place it! Also, who could resist the tie dye! 😉
